It was dark
The middle of the night
It was dark
After midnight
I was in the middle of the road
Ultimately in the glare
the brittle stare
of a headlight.
Mindless in my grief
I would rise
In the dark
In the middle of the night
I would dress
While she slept
Slip from that home
And walk the lanes
Mindlessly
Until, Like a rabbit
I was caught in the glare
Of the light.
And in the chill
of my space
My not being there place
She would wake
And search with
a hand to find
my missingness
And through her drowse
She would cover
her nakedness
her bare emotions.
She would gather
her keys and car
And scour the lanes
to catch me
in the glare of the light.
She would gather me up
And take me home
Save me from the dark
From the black of the night.
